Band 5 Biomedical Scientists - Andrology The closing date is 14 June 2026 UHB Cellular Pathology houses several sub‐specialities including Histopathology, Cytopathology, Electron Microscopy, a muscle biopsy service, a specialist Bone and Soft Tissue Tumour service, Andrology service, as well as a post‐mortem suite, and mortuary. This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated individual with an interest and experience in Andrology. We are looking for a keen and driven university graduate who holds the HCPC registration portfolio or is nearing completion of the IBMS generic portfolio and subsequent registration with the HCPC. The post holder will be based in the Andrology Department at Good Hope Hospital within Cellular Pathology, University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. This is a full‐time vacancy of 37.5 hours per week between Monday and Friday. It is essential you have a BSc (Hons) degree in Biomedical Science or IBMS accredited equivalent with demonstrable Andrology experience. Applications from non‐HCPC registered candidates are encouraged; however significant demonstrable Andrology experience would be essential, and relevant training will be provided. For non‐HCPC‐registered applicants, annexe 21 will apply under Agenda for Change. Successful candidates would need to sign a learning contract and be expected to complete the IBMS Generic portfolio within an agreed timescale. Main duties of the job The successful candidate will join the Andrology Department at Good Hope Hospital, undertaking all aspects of diagnostic semen analysis for fertility investigations and post‐vasectomy testing, as well as urine analysis for retrograde ejaculation investigations. The post holder will be responsible for the manual microscopic analysis and accurate reporting of patient results, requiring a high level of attention to detail. The role is patient‐facing in a clinic setting and requires excellent communication skills with a sensitive, compassionate and professional approach. As a pre‐specialist biomedical scientist, the post holder will be following standard operating procedures and support the implementation of improved or best practice. All work will be in keeping with the laboratory quality management system. This will include the effective use of laboratory procedural and other records, maintenance of assets/analysers, and supporting with the resolution of corrective and preventative actions. Person Specification Qualifications * BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science or equivalent academic achievement that is ratified by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) * State registration with Health Professions Council (HPC) * Evidence of continuing professional development and proficiency in accordance with HPC guidelines. * Working towards completion of post registration specialist competency portfolio. Experience * Experience of working in clinical laboratories. * Experience of laboratory techniques and automation. * Experience of dealing with suppliers, clinical and support staff, the public or customer care. Additional Criteria * Numerate and able to undertake scientific calculations with or without the use of aide. * Perform in a team. * Manual dexterity to undertake automated, manual, and specialised techniques. * Good and accurate IT input and MS Office skills. * Effective communication skills both written and oral. * Demonstrate logical thought processes and the ability to solve problems and plan remedial action. * Reliability. * Resilience and adaptability. * Self‐motivated. * Expected to participate in all out of hours periods as required by service provision.
